When you delete files from your disks, or format your media, or remove and create partitions, the data is not physically removed from the media, it is merely "marked" as deleted, so the computer knows that the "marked" areas can be over written.
It
is possible using special software, to attempt to recover
data from disks and other media, unless it is securely
erased. If you sell on, or dispose of your old computers,
disks or other storage media, it is possible for others to
recover data such as emails, credit card details, user
identities, personal and other sensitive data, in fact, any
file stored on your media could be recovered.
How does the secure erase process work?
We have specialist secure deletion software, which can exceed the US DoD 5220.22-M (8-306. /E,C and E) standard, so you can rest assured your data has been erased to the the same standard to that of the US Department of Defence. In simple terms, the software will write a specific pattern of data (specified by the above standard) to the areas of the disk which the file occupied. It then repeats this process several times. This in turn can be applied to a whole disk, or other media to ensure the entire media is securely erased.
You will be required to send your media to us, via recorded delivery, or if you prefer, you can bring it in person, together with a completed and signed consent form (which you can download from the left column of this screen). When securely deleted, we will mail it back to you (or you can collect), or dispose of your media if requested (an additional charge applies).
What media can we perform secure deletion on?
We can perform the secure deletion on a variety of media from hard disks and floppy disks, to USB sticks and flash cards. Our list of supported media grows all the time, as new storage devices become available. Please call us to ensure your media is supported.
What does the secure deletion service cost?
We offer one off secure deletions or you can purchase in bulk, for example, if you are disposing of your computers or laptops in bulk.
